The Most Unforgettable Images Throughout History

Before the end of the 19th century, there were no tools available to capture emblematic historic moments. Our only records were through paintings and drawings which celebrated crucial individuals and occurrences. Although these pieces of art were indeed impressive, they were not always precise. Luckily, the 20th century saw the invention of the first camera, known as the Kodak. This equipment made it possible to permanently capture and remember momentous events in history. Nowadays, we have the fantastic chance to travel back in time and recall some of the most iconic moments immortalised in black and white photographs.

Harry Handcuff Houdini

When discussing magic, it’s impossible not to mention Harry Houdini. He’s become a symbol for magic due to his exceptional escape tricks. Houdini was born in Hungary before making his way to the United States, looking to make a name as a magician. He started with nothing but eventually became arguably the most famous and top-earning magician of his time.

Houdini mainly performed acts where he would extricate himself from a range of binding objects like handcuffs, straitjackets, ropes, or even a hefty milk can. In three separate instances, he mesmerized the crowd by successfully freeing himself from a live burial.

The Infamous Luxury Liner

The term “Titanic” likely immediately brings to mind the popular film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, directed by James Cameron. This film depicts the colossal vessel colliding with a substantial iceberg, resulting in it snapping in two and plummeting into the sea.

Many young people may not understand that this huge vessel served as a lavish 5-star hotel, accommodating some of the country’s most affluent individuals. The Titanic’s wealthiest guest was John Jacob Astor, who, unfortunately, did not survive the disaster. When his body was retrieved from the wreckage, there was $2440 in his pocket. The image highlights one of the ship’s most extravagant staterooms.

Dorothy Counts-Scoggin

Douglas Martin took a prize-winning photograph in 1957 that harshly illustrated the racial tension at a previously all-white school. The photo featured Dorothy Counts-Scoggin, a 15-year-old girl who was ridiculed by her peers. Although the Pearsall Plan eradicated racial discrimination in schools, it couldn’t compel the students to be more tolerant. Dorothy joined the student body of Harry Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, only to leave within a few days because the harassment was unendurable.

Despite experiencing harassment encouraged by a member of the White Citizens Council, which included her peers spitting on her and pelting her with stones, Dorothy persisted. She also saw her only two allies undergo bullying; they received a barrage of egg throws. Dorothy eventually moved and completed her high school studies in Philadelphia, gaining a degree from Johnson C. Smith University. She attributed her endurance during these difficult times to her deep faith in God.

Location, Location, Location

Occasionally, it’s not the individuals, rather the surrounding that makes a picture truly remarkable. The brave diving attempts of these two men might not be as well-known as others mentioned on this list, but the photograph deserves your attention regardless.

The iconic nature of the water body featured in this snapshot compensates for the unknown identity of the divers. As the skyline subtly suggests, it is London’s River Thames. You can discern the Westminster Bridge and the House of Parliament forming the background. The jump by this pair, against such a legendary backdrop, immortalizes this moment. This spectacle was undoubtedly a rare spectacle for spectators as well.

Einstein Emigrates to the US

Einstein made a trip to the US in 1933, considering an opportunity at Caltech. However, during his time in the States, Hitler came into power in Germany. Einstein, being of Jewish descent, realized that it was dangerous for him to go back to Germany. This motivated his permanent move to the US. In a sightseeing event, Einstein visited the Hopi House situated close to the Grand Canyon.

The indigenous community greeted him heartily, even letting him wear a customary Hopi headdress. This picture includes Einstein and his spouse, Elsa, in the company of some members of the Hopi tribe. The photograph serves as solid proof of the theoretical physicist’s broad-mindedness.

A Very Hendrix christmas

There is no question that Jimi Hendrix ranks among the greatest electric guitarists and esteemed musicians in history. Despite his career only covering a span of four years, his impact on music is unrivaled. He is most noted for his remarkable performance at Woodstock, the era’s most famed music festival, where he captivated audiences with his exceptional talent, distinctive psychedelic flair, and guitar-shattering moves.

Given how jaw-dropping his antics always were, it comes as no surprise to encounter such a photo of the musician, donning a Santa outfit and showing off the trippy cover art of his album. This Saint Nick get-up was for an advertisement in Record Mirror, a now-defunct magazine. With Jimi’s eccentric character, though, it’s easy to mistake this for a casual outfit!

Private Presley

Today, Elvis Presley is universally recognized as the cornerstone of Rock ‘n’ Roll and one of the most significant figures of his era. Emerging to fame in the 1950s, Presley won over countless fans with his natural talent and charismatic appearance. Despite facing criticism for his unusual, hip-shaking and gyrating stage antics, it did not deter him from achieving remarkable success.

It may come as a surprise to many, but Elvis joined the army in 1958. Indeed, living up to his name as the King, he fulfilled his duty to his nation during the Korean-American war. Unfortunately, his tenure in the military was abbreviated due to the tragic death of his mother from a heart attack.

The Creepiest Pageant on Earth

Regrettably, this chilling image remains untouched and authentic. It might come across as strange, but there was a period when the Miss Lovely Eyes beauty contest genuinely existed. This event happened in the 1930s, within the timeframe between World War I and World War II, in the state of Florida.

This beauty contest is not your standard affair, as it is confined to the beauty of the competitors’ eyes, illustrated by the bags obscuring the rest of their faces. Therefore, don’t mistake them for a pack of tightly-clad bank burglars. Instead, they are just a few participants of this unusually unique pageant.

Working Out, Monroe-Style

Marilyn Monroe was a captivating beauty who went to great lengths to upkeep her divine figure. She made it a habit to exercise using weights frequently. Here we have an uncommon photograph of the enchanting starlet pausing from her routine to strengthen her biceps.

Did you know that despite her status as a global beauty icon and her advocacy for body acceptance, Norma-Jeane grappled with considerable self-confidence issues? She underwent multiple aesthetic operations including teeth realignment, rhinoplasty, and chin augmentation to fulfill the high expectations of her admirers.

Audrey Hepburn’s Unusual Pet

Regardless of having a small pooch popping out from your bag or a large St. Bernard trailing behind you on the pavements, possession of a pet dog has become a universal standard. However, for the film icon Audrey Hepburn, just having a canine wasn’t sufficient to spark her excitement.

Instead, she decided to have a deer for a pet! Yup, this photo of Audrey doing some grocery shopping with a deer is not at all Photoshopped. She met this deer while shooting the film, Green Mansions. The movie’s producers recommended that she spend some quality time with the tiny creature to reflect a real bond in the movie. Audrey fondly called her newfound friend Pippin.

Hemingway’s Favorite Spot

Ernest Hemingway is truly one of the most significant figures in American literature. He was so brilliant that some of his works, such as the famous Old Man and the Sea, still managed to get published even after his death. He wrote a total of seven novels and received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954.

If you envision Hemingway at his peak of creativity while seated at his desk, you’re off the mark. Surprisingly, the majority of his brilliant ideas were birthed during his bathtub sessions. It makes one curious about the novel he was contemplating while this photograph was taken.

Frank Sinatra is Just Like the Rest of Us

Frank Sinatra may have been a “man’s man,” but he did still adhere to proper hygiene. It was important for him to both look and feel good, hence the serious shaving session happening in this photo. The image was taken in 1965 by John Dominis, a photographer from Life. In order to capture genuine and personal moments of the famous musician, Dominis spent an entire month shadowing Sinatra.

The result is this deeply personal and unique instance of the vocalist grooming himself. Once the image was made public, it rapidly became iconic. His engaging in such a familiar activity only increased his appeal to his admirers. Sinatra himself even treasured the portrait.

Tenzin Gyatso

Tenzin Gyatso, popularly known as the 14th and current Dalai Lama, is celebrated globally as a monk for his significant contributions in advocating peace. Throughout his tenure as a spiritual leader in Tibet, he has encountered various notable global personalities such as US Presidents and stars from Hollywood.

It’s intriguing to think of the Dalai Lama, with his profound wisdom and influential campaigns, as a naive young boy. Born in 1935 into a family of Tibetan farmers, Tenzin became Holy at the tender age of 15. Since then, he has overseen the governance of Tibet (despite spending a significant portion of that time in exile in India).

Presidential Romance

Ex-US President, Bill Clinton, and ex-New York State Senator, Hillary Clinton, have experienced various highs and lows throughout their married life. In this picture, though, the image portrays them as an ecstatic young pair relishing the initial phase of their love affair. The photo, taken back in 1970, dates way before the Clinton-Lewinski controversy came into the light.

Bill and Hillary first crossed paths at Yale University during their law studies. Bill was smitten with Hillary’s strong sense of self-assurance. However, he had to ask for her hand in marriage twice before she consented. On his initial proposal, Hillary turned him down, stating that she required additional time. Only when Bill endeavored to propose the second time did she finally accept.

Andre Rene Roussimoff

Andre Rene Roussimoff, a native of France, made his name as a renowned professional wrestler better known by his moniker, Andre the Giant. Aptly named, he towered at a height of 7 feet 4 inches due to a condition called gigantism, which induces an overproduction of growth hormones within the body. His enormous stature also led him to be referred to as the “eighth wonder of the world.”

He competed in the very first WrestleMania hosted by WWE, where he fought against Hulk Hogan. In 1993, he was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame. He also tried his hand at acting, starring as Fezzik in the film, The Princess Bride. Andre the Giant was attending a fashion exhibit in Paris when this picture was taken.

The Matinee Lady

Actress Carol Wayne rose to fame in her guest appearances on the Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson. She rose during the golden age of late-night shows, and her consistent guest spots earned her the title of “Matinee Lady.” She was adored and loved by many, but her massive popularity met an abrupt end as she suffered a tragic fate.

Carol met her unexplained demise while touring Mexico with her companion, Edward Durston, under doubtful conditions. The actual cause of her passing remains concealed, making room for numerous speculations. A substantial section of the public is convinced that Durston’s involvement is to be suspected. However, due to a lack of substantial evidence, her partner could not be conclusively proven to be at fault.

Lucille’s Fake Nose

Everyone who lived through the 1950s came to know and love the perfect pairing that was Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Their sitcom, I Love Lucy, was one of the most-watched shows of their time. The show was so adored because of the hilarious duo.

From the image, Lucille may appear to be desperately needing urgent help but rest assured, it’s only a captured moment from an episode of a TV series. In this sequence, Lucy wore a false nose as a disguise which leads to a comedic turn of events when she inadvertently hits William Holden’s face with a pie. It was more of a “whoops” moment rather than a distress call.

The Blonde Bombshell

Marilyn Monroe is undeniably one of the most fascinating and attractive stars in the history of Hollywood. Audiences were drawn to her enchanting presence and enjoyed seeing her in movies. Throughout her career, she appeared in nearly 30 films. Despite her charming appearance, the “blonde bombshell” wasn’t necessarily the perfect package. Numerous accounts suggest that working with the actress was quite challenging.

Her struggle with ADHD compounded by her dependence on prescription drugs posed significant difficulties as she attempted to remember her lines. As an example, her short dialogue, “It’s me, Sugar,” required an astonishing 47 repetitions to obtain a satisfactory shot. Reportedly, Marilyn would inadvertently say, “Sugar, it’s me.” This photograph captures Marilyn receiving guidance from director Billy Wilder.

The Epitome of Bromance

When the names Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger are uttered, one cannot imagine anything other than a pair of muscular and testosterone-filled men. And who can blame you? These gentlemen starred in some of the most iconic guy flicks of all time, such as Rambo, The Terminator, and Rocky. And, if you look closely, these two actually look somewhat alike.

Take Danish model and actress, Brigitte Nielsen, for instance, who seems to have a specific taste, as she dated the two men. Even though they were both in a relationship with the same woman at different times, it didn’t hamper their friendship at all. They continue to be good friends to this very day. One glance at this heartwarming picture will show you a solid instance of the bond of brotherhood at its best.

Roar

In the 1920s, CGI and current technological innovations did not exist. This prompts one to consider how MGM, a production company, managed to film that signature clip of a lion’s roar? The legendary opening credit can be attributed to an individual named Leo, who was a real, living Lion.

Absolutely. The scene was shot without utilizing any special effects. Instead, a real lion was engaged in the production. Amplifying the riskiness of the situation was the need to provoke the lion to elicit a powerful roar. It was a highly perilous and bold venture, but it was certainly worthwhile. We’re grateful that no lives were lost during the creation of this video!

If a single image is worth a thousand words, then these captured moments from history undoubtedly express a million each. We’ve reserved the most extraordinary shots for the end. Take a glance and determine if you concur.

Man’s Bestfriend

Repeatedly, individuals have recounted unique experiences with dogs that have rescued them. Thus, to say “a dog is a man’s best friend” doesn’t entirely encompass the depth of this bond. Sometimes, dogs act as our guardians and protectors in various ways. This image perfectly illustrates the significant loyalty and dedication dogs show towards their humans.

This fluffy creature is clenching the young lad’s shirt in its jaws to prevent him from toppling into the river while he tries to retrieve his golf ball. If this doesn’t signify intellect and genuine affection, I’m not sure what does. This proves that if you shower your dog with the care and attention it needs, it will reciprocate with an equal measure of love and loyalty.

The Bikini

Achieving success as a fashion designer is a daunting task that requires much more than simply affixing your name to a garment. For example, Louis Réard faced a significant hurdle when he tried to introduce a new clothing item to the global market.

The introduction of the bikini in 1946 by a French designer was unfortunately met with disapproval, due to the deeply traditional and conservative consumer base at the time. Nevertheless, in the course of a few decades, the creator’s diligence was rewarded when the fashion industry, which had become more progressive, accepted the bikini as a valid piece of attire. From then on, the iconic swimsuit’s popularity has continued to rise.

Marilyn Plays Soccer

If it hasn’t yet been evident through the plethora of unique images of the legend incorporated in this compilation, I’m an enormous admirer of Marilyn Monroe. Other than her successful pursuits as an actress and a vocalist, she also displayed a keen interest in football. Therefore, when she received an invitation from the US National Soccer Team and the Israeli Hapoel Tel Aviv team to attend a match, the stunning blonde enthusiastically accepted.

She displayed such fervor and zeal for the game on the field that the officials permitted her to interact with the ball prior to the formal beginning of the match. The joyful grin on her countenance is indeed invaluable.

The Meeting Of Two Stars

During the 1960s, the swooping ascent to fame of The Beatles and Muhammad Ali was unrivaled in speed and strength. Despite being known for different abilities, their enormous popularity was on par. The Beatles ushered in the “British Invasion” by introducing English pop music to the Americans, while Muhammad Ali coasted internationally on the wave of his unbeatable boxing prowess.

Ali was also outspoken about his political views, ultimately peaking with his defiance to be conscripted into the Vietnam War. This unique and endearing photo captures the moment these legendary figures met for the initial time. There was such an abundance of luminaries in this room, it’s astonishing it didn’t burst.

Frida, The Beautiful… Boy?

historical 104

Can you identify Frida Kahlo in this image? The renowned Mexican artist is well-known for her unique character. But were you aware that her distinctiveness goes back to her early years? This photograph was shot in 1924, during Frida’s 17th year. Her father Guillermo requested all the kids to strike a pose for the camera — and indeed, they struck a pose.

However, Frida came up with the ingenious plan to change her appearance. If you’re still having trouble locating her, try focusing on the apparently male figure in the center exhibiting a cheeky persona. Contrary to first impressions, that is indeed Frida. The fierce gaze she holds, combined with a well-tailored suit, certainly gives her a more masculine appeal.

The First Female Boston Marathon Runner

Across the ages, women have greatly advanced the cause of equality within male-dominated societies. Notably, Rosa Parks and Emmeline Pankhurst have made significant contributions to the advancement of women’s rights. In the sphere of sports, Kathrine Switzer, a marathon runner from Germany, broke barriers by becoming the first woman to participate in the Boston Marathon. This took place in 1967, a time when women’s participation in the race was not permitted.

Despite facing discouragement, Switzer was not deterred. Even when race official, Jock Semple, attempted to hinder her progress by pulling at her race bib, she held onto her resolve. Thomas Miller, her boyfriend who was also participating in the race, aided her by pushing the interfering official to the ground. It wasn’t until five years afterward, in 1972, that women were officially recognized as participants in the race.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

historical 101

Long before Mahatma Gandhi guided his nation towards liberation from British colonial power, he began his journey as a humble man aspiring to obtain a law degree. The photograph was captured in April 1893 when he was merely 23 years old. Upon commencing his career in law, Gandhi chose to reside in South Africa.

Over the course of two decades, he fostered his philosophies about non-aggression, human rights, and liberty. He subsequently became a highly significant figure in history advocating for peace. The honorific “Mahatma”, translating to “respected”, is often used to address him. He is recognized as the progenitor of the nation in India.

The French Statue

historical 103

The iconic Statue of Liberty, positioned on Liberty Island in New York, is not as American as many presume. Contrary to popular belief, this colossal landmark was originally constructed in Paris before being presented as a gift to the United States.

The design of the statue was conceived by a French sculptor named Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The metal framework was then constructed by Gustave Eiffel, who is also the brains behind the Eiffel Tower. This photograph affords us a look at the final stages of the production of the iconic statue, circa 1884, during the period when the foundation stone was being put in place.

Bob Senior and Junior

When you hear the name Robert DeNiro, you most likely immediately imagine a serious guy with a tough demeanor. This comes as no surprise as he did play many manly roles in various classic movies such as Raging Bull, Taxi Driving, and of course, who could forget him in The Godfather? While it’s hard to imagine him as a cute and innocent baby, he was indeed once a tiny little kid, like we all were.

This image portrays a somewhat tough-looking toddler, evidently spending quality time with his affectionate father, the world-renowned artist Robert DeNiro Sr. In their younger years, Bob Jr. and his father shared a close bond. Upon receiving his numerous acting accolades, Bob Jr. made a point to tribute one to his beloved dad.

General Elizabeth

If you watched the historical drama, The Crown on Netflix, then you would know that the United Kingdom’s reigning queen, Elizabeth II was part of the Auxiliary Territorial Service or ATS, an army branch for women. See, there is so much more to her than meets the eye.

Amidst the turmoil of World War II, the queen was not merely a silent figurehead, but actively took part in aiding her citizens, serving as an automobile mechanic. She bravely broke past the barriers of what one might commonly expect of a royal, not hesitating to soil her hands. Our hats go off to this incredible woman, who exemplifies both grace and prowess as a queen and a proficient mechanic!

A Difficult Past

Have I ever told you how much I admire Marilyn Monroe? I promise this will be my final note about her. Despite her remarkable beauty and overwhelming success, Norma-Jeane had to face a tough and challenging childhood. She was orphaned at an early age, with the death of both her parents, which led her to an unavoidable life in an orphanage.

At the tender age of 16, she tied the knot with the boy next door as an escape from her dreadful existence. Her newlywed spouse soon departed for World War II service, and she found employment at a factory in Van Nuys. The picture that we possess is believed to be the very snapshot that catapulted her to stardom.

Albert and Charlie: An Early Bromance

I had never considered drawing a connection between these two individuals, but it turns out, the legendary figures were quite close friends. Despite coming from diametrically opposed career paths, theoretical physicist Albert Einstein and silent movie star Charlie Chaplin were surprisingly well-acquainted. On the surface, one wouldn’t expect them to have any common ground, given their distinctly diverse professions.

Despite their European roots, with Chaplin hailing from England and Einstein from Germany, they each chose to move to the United States. Upon their initial meeting during Chaplin’s tour of the nation, the pair immediately clicked. Their camaraderie was so strong that Chaplin extended an invitation to Einstein for dinner, leading to a historic friendship reminiscent of a modern bromance, a rarity in the 19th century.

Jayne Mansfield’s Revenge

The hostile gaze tells the whole story. Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren, both notable actresses during the 1950s, often found themselves vying for the same parts. This inevitable competition led to a fierce rivalry. Sophia, a sultry brunette, and Jayne, an attractive blonde, found themselves in conflict due to the limited roles available for women in Hollywood during that period. You can see the animosity towards Jayne radiating from Sophia’s eyes in this photograph.

In reality, this was merely a public relations maneuver by Jayne Mansfield. The image was snapped at a function to greet the Italian Loren to Hollywood. Mansfield, who was not an official guest, gatecrashed the gathering in a plunging neckline dress without a bra. During the taking of this iconic image, she intentionally slouched her shoulders and leaned forward to expose her chest.

Walt Disney’s Lunch

Over the years, the Disney name has become synonymous with entertainment. From iconic films such as Snow White and Bambi to classics like The Lion King and Aladdin, and of course the well-loved Disneyland theme parks, Disney is pretty much the gold standard of entertainment.

It might be difficult to remember, considering the enormous success of the company, that Disney initially began with monochromatic cartoon figures such as Mickey Mouse. The enchanting journey started with the company’s pragmatic founder, Walt Disney. Take a look at this snapshot of Walt, the cartoonist, savouring fried chicken for lunch. Undoubtedly, he has made incredible progress.
